Nathaniel Herreshoff designed the huge 1903 America’s Cup defender
RELIANCE that defeated the British challenger SHAMROCK III 3-nil.
This portrait of the giant yacht, the largest ever to compete in the ‘Cup,
portrays a critical moment toward the closing stages of the second
race when fickle winds had allowed SHAMROCK to close within the defenders
handicap. When the wind settled in to a steady direction and increased
in pressure, spinnakers were hoisted and RELIANCE powered away to victory. |
