In 1969, a young New Zealand sailor Chris Bouzaid and his crew, Roy
Dickson, Alan Warwick, John Woolley, Ward Schofield and Dave Craig,
sailed the Sparkman and Stevens designed RAINBOW II to One Ton Cup
victory off Heligoland, in the North Sea.
The painting portrays a weary but elated crew sailing toward the finish
line at the end of a tough, long ocean race.
On the previous day RAINBOW II had rounded the final windward mark
astern of the then current One Ton Cup champion OPTIMIST of Germany,
but outsailed her during the night, finally passing her after a hard
fought gybing duel just hours from the finish. RAINBOW II was nine
minutes ahead at the gun.
This victory firmed-up the kiwi’s points lead and another victory
in the next race made it four wins from four races. The boys in black
had put New Zealand firmly at the front of World ocean racing. |
