The painting “SUSANNE & WESTWARD” is a re-creation
of a critical moment during a race sailed on the waters of the English
Channel during the summer of 1910. These were two of the many beautiful
schooners sailing on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean during the
late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
Both were large yachts by any standard but “Susanne” (154
tons) designed by William Fife, was simply overwhelmed by “Westward” (338
tons). She was the giant creation of Nathaniel Herreshoff, a yacht
revered then and still considered by many now, the greatest of
all racing schooners.
