“Pamir”

On the July 29 1942, the Finnish four masted barque PAMIR sailed into Wellington harbour and was seized by the New Zealand Government as a prize of war.

Unknown to her Finnish crew, the German army had overrun their tiny country and Finland’s capitulation saw them entering enemy status with Britain and the commonwealth.

PAMIR sailed nine voyages across the Pacific to San Francisco and Vancouver under the New Zealand flag from March 1942 to April 1947.

Her last voyage under the New Zealand flag was to the United Kingdom and return from October 1947 to October 1948. She was then returned to Finland.
