Generally, the news media thrives on bad news. In New Zealand sporting
failure is as bad as bad news can be!
Following the 2003 America’s Cup debacle the news media set about
Team New Zealand with a relish. If you believed even half of that which
was written, you’d have given up on any chance of the New Zealand
sporting icon ever challenging for the Auld Mug again.
Fortunately, wiser council prevailed and with the appointment of sailing
legend Grant Dalton leading an enthusiastic embryo team, the 2003 yachts
were assessed and strengthened, experienced crew were signed on and
sponsorship was obtained. Team New Zealand became Emirates Team New
Zealand.
In 2004, the ‘Team competed in the first series of pre-2007 America’s
Cup regatta’s and covered themselves in glory!
My painting “AHEAD AGAIN” depicts Emirates Team New Zealand’s
NZL 82 competing more than equally in Marseille in 2004, with the old
adversary from 2003, the Swiss yacht ALINGHI.
Bring it on in 2007! |
